Have you heard about The Splendid Sampler? It’s a year-plus long quilt along hosted by Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson, and it’s going to be not just a lot of fun, but a chance to learn new techniques and to share with other quilters around the globe.
Here’s how it will work- starting this week, there will be 2 blocks released per week (100 blocks, and running through March 2017.) Techniques include piecing, applique, embroidery, paper piecing, and English paper piecing. This is a FREE quilt-along!
88 designers have come together to bring you these 6″ quilt block designs, including moi!!! My block will be released in November.
I will be sewing along with all of you as well! I won’t get to all of the blocks, however I do have a project in mind for the blocks that I make, so check in here often to see what I’ve been up to and to see which blocks I’ve made!
Sooo….. first thing to do is choose your fabrics!
I have these Lily Ashbury fabrics that I’ve been sitting on, waiting for the right project. At first I thought I’d use them, but I quickly realized that the scale of many of the fabrics would be much too large for making 6″ blocks… so, back into the stash they go. Maybe next time….
Then I remembered that I had a nice little pile from a recent FAT sitting in my studio… I pulled out some of those, and added a few more from my stash, and this is what I came up with:
Here is my very first block! It’s actually a “bonus” or practice block, and it can be found here. You may want to do a practice block (or 2 or 3…) first to “audition” your fabrics.
I wasn’t sure where I wanted to place my colors, so I used my colored pencils to plan it out on my pattern:
There is also a Facebook group where you can post your photos, ask questions, see what other people are up to, and interact with the designers. Click here to go to the Facebook group. (And if you don’t have a Facebook account, you can see the posts here on the Splendid Sampler website.)
All of the information about the quilt along can be found here!
This is going to be a great year! Let’s get started!
