Dandy Drive Quilt Along- Week 3

It’s Week 3 of the Dandy Drive Sew Along- how are you doing? Remember you can get the free patterns here. And we have

In the last couple of weeks, we’ve made our flower centers and added the petals:

Now it’s time to make our stems and leaves! Doesn’t that black background look great? (It is Moda Essential Dots.) Here’s the stem and leaf block:

And here’s what it looks like when you sew it to the flower:

A few tips for making this block:

–You can try using a 1/4″ seam marker to make all of those HST’s (half square triangle units.) This is my favorite– I use it whenever I’m making HST’s!

–I like to make my HST’s a little large, then trim them down. If you’d like to do that for this pattern, then cut your green and background squares (G and F) 3 5/8″ instead of 3 3/8″, then trim the finished HST’s to 3″.

–Once again, as I mentioned back in Week 1, I pressed my seam allowances open- that’s my personal preference. I think it makes the block lay flatter, plus I don’t have to try to remember which way to press them for each row.

–To help eliminate confusion when sewing all those squares together, I like to arrange the squares and then mark the row number on the seam allowance.
