Fabric Ideas for the I Love Home Free Block of the Month

Have you signed up for the Free I Love Home Block of the Month yet? No?? Just click here– it’s going to be so much fun!!

Yep, the BOM patterns and sew along are Free! Yippee! Want to get an optional kit to make a quilt just like the one below? Click here.

Let’s talk about fabrics, OK? One of the things I love best about quilting is how many different looks you get from the same pattern, just by choosing different fabrics. It’s always a lot of fun during our BOM events to see what everyone is doing! Today, I thought I’d show you a ton of ideas for making this year’s quilt. These all show a “focus” fabric in the center of the blocks, but of course you can also make the applique or embroidery option (included in the free pattern.)

So, let’s go!! (Get the fabric requirements here.)

Let’s start with Christmas fabrics!

Do you like traditional fabrics? Try something like this:

Are you in the mood for some 30’s fabrics??

I love these clear, refreshing blues:

And also these vibrant oranges and pinks:

Maybe you like a “shabby chic” look:

I happen to love a “cottage-y” style:

And here is a bit of “grunge”:

And some gorgeous modern prints:

Which do you like best? What are you planning to do for your I Love Home quilt?? Tell us in the comments, or in our Sew Quilty Friends Facebook group!

so looking forward to this I plan to do the embroidered one like I did with you previous ones bit confused with the fabrics will I need an extra quarter of white for the blocks and then must decide what colours to use cannot imagine a quilt without plenty of green so will substitute green instead of blue and might find orange creeping in instead of pink!if okay with you

I love the setting! This is a beautiful BOM. I’m looking forward to doing the embroidery version, but it’s going to be hard to choose the colors!!! I appreciate all the beautiful choices!!!!

In keeping with the “I Love Home” theme and since we already have Seahawks fever out here in Washington State I think I will use Seahawks colors!

I am going to see if I have enough Christmas fabric in my stash, I really like that idea.

I am looking at a vintage look with floral Centres and cream rather than white background, what do you think?

Hi Debra! You could do any of these ideas with applique in the center!

I just might do elements and masculine neutrals for a guy quilt. Thinking in process. Stand back!

I really love the little houses with flowers/trees for my “I love home” quilt but then I saw the Christmas fabric and I really like that too! Decisions! Just too many good ideas!

I am thinking of doing wool appliqué on a flannel background. I think that will take some adjustments. What do you think of the idea of using wool from my stash? I have so much left from making a braided wool rug.

Hi Linda! You could definitely do wool applique! I can’t wait to see how it turns out :)

I would love to make the modern look but with Western fabric (horses, cowboys, lasso, etc).

I am a little confused. When you print out the list of fabrics needed it states that the finished Quilt size is 53″ square. But the kits says the Quilt is 54 x 68. So is the fabric requirement for just the Square or the Quilt. I am making mine out of flannel and I love the idea of the wool appliqué.

Love the quilt, have made the last 2. Can I find out what size square the applique is. I am thinking of using a Christmas panel, but it may be too big. If you could let me know, that would help me decide my color way.

As always, thanks for all you do.
