This weekend, my husband and I traveled to Texas to visit our youngest daughter who is doing an internship there this summer. It was so wonderful to see her again! We did a lot of fun things- visited museums, went to an outdoor community event with food and vendors, saw the movie Mr. Holmes (which we really enjoyed- such a nice change from all of the super hero and action movies which seem to dominate the theaters in the summer!) And of course, being in Texas, we ate our fill of Mexican food!
She is working on an interesting project at the university and the Dallas Museum of Art- researching a mystery behind a painting from the 1500’s. Seems that the painting’s subject and her husband died mysteriously on the same day (possibly poisoned), and the boy in the painting has had his face painted over with another face…. Interesting! She is doing all kinds of research, which my non-scientific brain does not comprehend! We got to see the lab where she does some of her work:
I also got the chance to visit a couple of quilt shops- which you have to do when you travel, right? One shop had this lovely vintage and well worn & loved quilt hanging outside.
And this shop has an actual working post office inside! So convenient (maybe too convenient??) if you buy too much to carry home with you and need to ship it!
There were several rooms, one set up as an old general store (because if you have a post office, you need a general store, too, of course.)
Even the area with the long-arm machine was sectioned off with a really cute old-fashioned screen door:
They had a copy of A Flair for Fabric, a book I contributed to last year. My quilt is on the cover on the right:
Back home, I have been working on a new hexie project. I decided that I wanted to make a lap size quilt from hexies- but didn’t want commit the next 10 or so years of my life to the process. So, I ordered templates to make these giant hexies, they are 5″ across at the widest point. That should make things go quicker, right?
I’m trying to spend more time on my art- it’s something that I’ve neglected lately, and I really miss it!
I am busy painting up the applique and embroidery designs which I designed for the Cozy Afternoon Free Block of the Month– I have some ideas in mind for these, and I can’t wait to get them done to show you:
Don’t forget that The Art of Home Free Emagazine comes out next week! Yippee! It’s a little late, but I hope you will think that it was worth the wait :)
Always worth the wait! Love your pics that store is adorable!
Thank you, Karen! Yes it was such a cute little shop :)
What fun!!! Your daughter is a very intelligent and interesting young lady – imagine doing such a unique internship! And that quilt shop – unusual to say the least!!! Can’t wait for the new magazine to come out :)
Hi Teresa! Yes she is very smart, she has always been “older” than her age, even when she was in preschool lol.
Oh! And I forgot – I’m so looking forward to seeing what you are going to do with those adorable paintings!!!!
Hopefully, they will be done soon, Teresa!
How exciting..you are in my neck of the woods (we actually live 30 miles south of Dallas in a rural area); however, we are on vacation in Florida this week! I know you are so proud and happy to see your daughter and learn of some of her accomplishments while also taking in some of the sites, mexi food, and of course quilt shops :) !! My daughter is a senior attending school and our girls are probably the same age. Time always seems short when we get together with our kids- but very valuable!! Enjoy your wonderful week with your daughter, in sunny Texas! Looking forward to my first issue of your Emagazine! :) :)
I really liked the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, Monica! So many cute little towns to see :)
This was my first time reading your stuff. I can’t wait to read the emag. Thank you so much for making the time to share your finds and your life with all of us.
Thank you Cheri! I’m so glad you are enjoying it!
facinating research your daughter is doing, wonder if the childs face was painted over to conceal its identity? love your designs and am looking forward to your next e-zine.
It’s a mystery, Sue! Of course there are theories, but we may never know! I know my daughter is enjoying working on it a lot.
Really looking forward to the next issue of your lovely magazine, you put such a lot of work in to all the issues thank you so much. ☺
Thanks soooo much for your nice comment! It makes me so glad that you enjoy it!
what a lovely shop, a post office too, love it! xo
It was a really cute place to visit- I didn’t spend “too” much money, lol!
Today I visited the “Quilting Needle” in Allison Park, PA. Saw a fabric that would work perfect with hexagons that I’m assembling. It will be used for the background though. Turns out it is the same fabric you are making hexagons out of — the floral “For Red Rooster Fabrics”!! I just love the design and colors!!!! I enjoy your website SEW much!
Oh I love that fabric! I’ve had it in my stash for a couple of years, waiting for the right project :)
Looking forward to your e-magazine. My grand daughter lives in Waco TX and is a social worker in a nearby high school. Husband is in grad school at Baylor. Would love to visit TX. Have never been there. Your daughter is very lucky to have such an interesting internship and will no doubt have a wonderful future.
Edie- You know who else lives in Waco? Joanna and Chip from Fixer Upper on HGTV- I love them and love their show! I wonder if your granddaughter has ever met them?….
While you were at the quilt shop, did you go down the street to Babe’s Chicken. It is fabulous fried chicken with all the home style side dishes. They do have healthier items on the menu but who would want that. Glad you had a great time here and hope your daughter enjoys her internship. Come back soon.
Carla- No we didn’t make it to Babe’s – so many great places to eat! My daughter also told us about a place that serves a chicken sandwich which is fried chicken on a glazed doughnut for the “bread”- missed that too! I guess we will have to go back some time :)
LOL As if you would have to have an excuse to go back!! I know how it is to get to visit one’s children. The visits are way too short and too long between each one.
I really enjoy your Emagazine and the BOM quilt-alongs. Thanks for taking time to do them for us.
Your daughter”s project sounds so interesting. I hope you will keep us posted if she solves the mystery of the painting. Texas is a fun place to visit and you can’t beat their barbecue. The antique quilt is so pretty and what an interesting quilt shop.
I enjoyed your E magazine and am loving the Cozy Afternoon BOM. I stop what I’m doing and make the bock as soon as I get it, so am patiently waiting block 4!! I’m making this project for a dear friend of mine from England and she just loves Tea Pots and Tea Cups as I do!!
Thank you again! Linda
Thanks Linda! I think England is the “capital” of teacups! So that is perfect….
Oh, dear! I see another quilting project in my future. I absolutely love that vintage quilt for both the colors and block design. I’ll do the center as a 6″ finished block and go from there. I even have a striped fabric that I think will be perfect! Is it any wonder that I never get my projects finished because so many other options keep popping up. Then there are the projects in your e-magazine and your BOMs… Oh, to live a couple more lifetimes with nothing to do but create.
Cindy- I think we can all agree that there are too many projects and not enough time. Maybe there will be fabric in heaven :)
