I think most of you have probably heard about the One Million Pillowcase Challenge, hosted by American Patchwork and Quilting. In a nutshell- you can make simple pillowcases and donate them to a local charity of your choice, and the goal is to reach One Million Pillowcases donated. Isn’t that awesome!?

American Patchwork & Quilting is hosting the third annual One Million Pillowcase Challenge 24-Hour Sew-a-Thon at its headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa. Starting at 3:00 P.M. on Friday, September 16th and running through 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 17th, the public is invited to Meredith Corporation to sew pillowcases for local Des Moines charities. All supplies will be provided free and staff members will be on hand to help walk participants through the process of making a pillowcase using the easy roll-it-up method. Light refreshments will be served.

Here is the good news- you can participate even if you don’t live in the Des Moines area. I’ll get to that in a bit…

Also, find out how to make this totally adorable pillowcase (keep reading….)

You can donate pillowcases to a local/national charity of your choice- shelters, hospitals, nursing homes, Red Cross, disaster victims, etc. Many local shops also act as drop off points, so you can just bring your pillowcases in and they will take care of getting them to the charities, if you’d rather do that. What an incredible way to use our hands and hearts and talents to serve others!!! Click here for a list of charities (or to submit your charity as a recipient.) Looking for a shop that is collecting pillowcases? Just click here.

Be sure to add your completed and donated pillowcase(s) to the tally, so our hosts American Patchwork & Quilting can track the numbers. Click here.

Have I mentioned that making pillowcases is FUN!!! There are TONS of free patterns here for you to choose from, and of course you can get creative and make your own design. Just be sure that the pillowcase is washable and comfortable for the recipient (i.e. no fancy, scratchy embellishments on the face of the case, etc. )

Here is how you can have a fun sew along time, even if you don’t live in the Des Moines area:

Every year, I host an online Sew Along Day, here on my blog and on Facebook, in conjunction with my Free Block of the Month. It’s a chance for us to get together and sew and “chat” online, win giveaway prizes, and have lots of fun. Coincidentally, I had scheduled this year’s Sew Along Day for September 17- the same day as the Pillowcase Sew-A-Thon. So- if you can’t make it to Des Moines, please join us here on the interwebs!! In previous years we’ve had sewists join us from all over the US, Canada, the UK,  South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. You can use this as a chance to make pillowcases, or catch up on your BOM blocks.

Last week, I made this cute pillowcase using one of the applique patterns from this year’s Maggie’s First Dance Free Block of the Month. On Sew Along Day, I will show you exactly how to make it! I have to tell you, this was such a fun and easy project to make- I plan on making a bunch more!

In the meantime, if you’d like the applique patterns, plus the block patterns for our FREE block of the month, just click here and the patterns will be delivered to your email. (NOTE- THE PATTERNS ARE NOT LOCATED ON MY BLOG OR WEBSITE. YOU MUST SIGN UP HERE TO GET THE FREE PATTERNS.)

More details about Sew Along Day to follow- be sure to get on my newsletter list, follow my blog, and/or my Facebook page so you can keep up with all the important details and don’t miss a thing!!!
