Sew Sweet Simplicity Free BOM- Blocks and Tote Bag Pattern are here!!

Oh this has been fun (insert sarcastic voice here!!!)  Many of you are probably aware that my website has been down for a couple of days. We have managed to restore most of it, but not the home page. AND my original blog post for the Block of the Month and Giveaway were completely lost. So I’m going to try to quickly recap… I don’t know if I’ll ever get the original post back.

Thanks for your patience during the last couple of days- this is not how we wanted to spend Christmas week! But we are trying to keep our sense of humor. We surmised that perhaps the North Koreans got tired of hacking Sony, so they came after me:

WebHack

For Month 3 of the Sew Sweet Simplicity Free BOM, we are working on Block 3, Bonus Block 1 (which you will need if you are making the 6 block quilt), and the BONUS Tote Bag Pattern. The tote bag features block #3 for the BOM, but you can use any block from the BOM (or, any 12″ “orphan” block you have laying around.)

ToteBag_Front_JacquelynneSteves

Here is the machine appliqued version of Block 3, after it was quilted:

Block3WApplique_SewSweetSimplicityBOM_JacquelynneSteves

And here is the embroidered version of Block 3:

Block3WEmbroidery_SewSweetSimplicityFreeBOM_JSteves

(For the last month of the BOM, I am going to show you more close-ups of the quilting that my long-arm quilter did. It’s fabulous!!)

Here is the appliqued version of Bonus Block 1:

BonusBlock1_SewSweetSimplicityFreeBlockoftheMonth

And of course- we are having giveaways. To win a pattern bundle (open to U.S. and international readers, please visit the blogs listed below (and yes, although I love Christmas, I don’t like cold weather- so I’m already starting to think about summer):

I am also giving away 3 fabric “mini-kits.” To win a mini-kit to make one block from the BOM, comment here. The fabric is already cut, so you can just sew! You can use the extra block to make a small project like a pillow. You can also work on it during our “Catching Up” Sew Along Day in January (see below). If you commented here on the previous post (which was lost)- no need to comment again. I do have those comments filed away in a safe place, so you are still entered to win.

MiniKitGiveaway_SewSweetSimplicityBOM

Some of you have emailed and said that you’ve fallen behind on your BOM blocks, because you’ve been working on making gifts. Or maybe you haven’t even started yet. Or maybe you are an over-achiever type who’s finished all of them and you are just looking for something else to do!! Mark your calendars for Saturday January 10, 2015 when we will be having a “Catching Up” Sew Along Day, which promises to be lots of fun- more details to follow!

So to recap the giveaways- To win the pattern bundle- visit the blogs listed above. To win the mini-kit, comment on this post:

  • *Tell me- what is the best gift you’ve ever received, either for Christmas, birthday, or any other occasion.
  • *Comment by 11:59 PM EST on January 1, 2015.
  • *I must be able to contact you by email, either through your profile or comment. If I choose your name, but can’t find your email, I will choose another winner.
  • *Open to US and international readers.

Thanks for your patience during this time! I hope I remembered to cover everything in this post!

While expecting our first son my husband gave me my first sewing machine. Now here we are 66 years later and I still have that one to keep the Husqvarna Diamond company; but which one is dearest is still the first one. He was so proud to give that one to me.
PS. I still thought the baby clothes were supposed to be made by hand.

The best gift I received was a brand new French Horn from my parents when I was a sophomore in high school. I had an older one that they had bought used for me when I was in 7th grade. All I wanted was a new case for that horn. I was happy when they brought out the new case and ecstatic when I opened it and found the horn that ended up taking me so many places in my life.

The best gift I’ve ever received (other than our kids!) would have to be the sewing machine my husband surprised me with for Christmas one year. We couldn’t afford much then, but he went to Sears and bought me a new machine, all by himself (with help from a good saleswoman). My old hand me down machine was almost unusable, and he knew I wanted to sew things for our new home and our young daughter. I used that Kenmore for years, and our youngest daughter has it now and is happily sewing and quilting with it. Happy Holidays to you!!

Thank you so much for the free block of the month gifts. My best gift was a quilt from my mom sent to me when I was in cold Alaska teaching school. She made the quilt from patterns in a learn to quilt book (she definitely already knew how to quilt!) and then hand quilted it. She sent it to me because I was COLD! Love my mom and love the gift!

My Best Gift was The Christmas I was 12 years old. I wanted a sewing machine and I knew my parents were really short on money I did not expect anything but clothes and the usual. When I got up Christmas Morning There was a Singer 401 In the cabinet with a great big red bow. This Christmas I am 68 and I still have my Machine. I have used it and it has been very faithful to me. I now have some newer Machines but still love my old singer.

ooooh the best gift I ever received was something I got about 4 years ago… from my mum. It sat in a cupboard all that time until this year, when I ‘dug’ it out and took the dust cover off it.
See for years and years I have admired the wonderful sewing my mum did, she made me clothes when I was a child and always made curtains and other furnishings too. I am a creative person, but always done things by hand. I think this is due to me having specific learning difficulties, I need to touch and feel things.
Well for years I had been saying I would love a sewing machine… to create wonderful things on.. the years come and went I never got one. Then one year out of the blue and much surprise to me, my mum bought me one! I opened it and sat crying for hours! I just could not believe it!
I took it home and it sat for years in a cupboard.. without me even taking it out of the box. Why you wonder? Because I felt I was not capable of using it, not good enough.. so yes the gift was the sewing machine.. but the best gift was the tuition my mum gave me this year after owning the sewing machine for over years!
This year after spending a few days and one to one tuition with my mum I am gaining confidence with using my machine. I am loving the freedom and it still amazes me that I can now use my sewing machine :) I love to experiment and try new things.. one day I hope to make a quilt.. one step at a time! And my mum is very proud of what I can do too :).

It was a wonder full weekend! Thinking that was it (certainly enough!!) the remainder of my family surprised me at a restaurant for breakfast!

    Dear Jacquelynne
I must admit the most unusual gift I have ever & will ever receive was a baby. Yep, I went into labour on my birthday only to have 5 hours later a baby girl.,Emma. So I received a 7lb 10oz bundle of pink joy on my 27th birthday. Though the most embarrassing thing was been sung by the staff Happy Birthday while delivering her.
I didn’t know if the song was for Emma or myself but thems the breaks.
P.S. My husband had forgotten to get me a present & when questioned by the staff what did he give me the answer was a typical male’s one,”Well, a baby of course”. How could you top that!.

I think my best and most memorable Christmas gift was a pair of diamond stud earrings. They weren’t something I’d been wishing for, but an inspired gift from my new husband. He sent me on a treasure hunt with clues in different places in our home ending with a little plush bear who was wearing a scarf and the earrings! 30 years later, I still have the bear and my earrings!

The best gift that I have ever received was my mom’s cross necklace which she never took off. After she passed away last year, my father stated to me that he wanted to give it to their first great grand-daughter. I was a little hurt by this but didn’t say anything as their great grand-daughter was only a month old at the time and she would not even be able to wear it until she was much much older! My dad surprised me and gave it to me instead. It was not a special day Just an ordinary day. He stated to me that He made a mistake and that mom would have wanted me to have it. I have worn it every day since and will pass it on to one of my girls. OR maybe even to said great grand daughter..

My best Christmas gift ever was from my daughter, for the Christmas I spent living in Texas with my sister while she went through chemo. My darling daughter contacted all of her friends who grew up hanging out at our house, and had each of them put what they could afford on a Walmart gift card to send with her Christmas card. The gift card ended up having just enough to buy an inexpensive sewing machine. (When I went to Texas, I left everything in storage in Washington state.) It was a real blessing to be able to sew again after nearly a year without a machine! Withdrawals were awful! Lol!

My best gift is what my Mum has just given me this year. I spent Christmas morning with my family in New Zealand and then flew over to Sydney to spend a few weeks with my Mum, arriving in time to have Christmas tea with Mum. We opened our gifts late on Christmas night and Mum gave me the most beautiful photo of my 2 daughters on a canvas block for me to hang on the wall. She had it copied from one of the small photos they sent her from their holiday with her last year. It certainly is a gift to cherish.

The Best Christmas Gift I ever got was a Dark Green Corduroy Coat with a Fur Collar. I had been wearing an old coat that was a quilted army green color. Was given to me by my Grandma, as not to hurt her feelings I was forced to wear it. I was embarrassed to wear it and did not like it at all. I had seen some nice fur collar coats and asked for a new one for Christmas. My Mom keep leading me to believe that it was still a good coat, nothing wrong with it and I certainly didn’t need a new one. Needless to say, when I opened up the package with the new Fur Coat on Christmas morning, I was very surprised and the tears were flowing.

The best gift I get each year is from my daughter. She makes a photo calendar for me with everyone’s birthdays and anniversaries printed on the right dates. I depend on that calendar and love the photos she picks out. My husband is in the doghouse because he never buys me a gift. Ever. Blah! So, I just buy my own!!!! I just ordered a new accuquilt die and mat and think I will use it on The Sew Sweet Simplicity block 2. :)

To Jill: My MIL was married to my FIL for 54 yrs with never a gift. She was one smart lady in that she bought her own always instead of waiting or fuming in silence. She also kept strict records of all he spent on his “toys” (antique cars, etc) and spent an equal amount on herself every time. At one time early in our marriage I thought she was selfish. (I was so foolish and young.) I was later to realize: She was one smart lady to gift or rather TAKE CARE of herself in such a great manner! Enjoy you new accuquilt die, etc!

The best Christmas gift I ever received came from my husband. Several years ago, I was really down at Christmas. My husband found a snow globe that played “I just called to say I love you” at a second hand store and bought it to surprise me. It touched my heart and snapped me right out of the doldrums. It still makes me smile every time I see it or play it.

My favorite gift for Christmas was a sewing machine. I did a lot of sewing in high school but gave up the craft while in collage. Then career, marriage, volunteer activities, etc. got in the way. About five years ago I got the urge to sew and asked for a new machine. The rest is history. I just received a second machine for Christmas this year. Sorry to hear that your web page was hacked. The best gift I have ever received was my (Janome) Elna sewing machine that my husband bought me for my 50th birthday this year. We went to a little sewing shop to buy me a part for my old Janome sewing machine so I could learn to FMQ and while they were looking for the parts I was browsing the machines and the sales lady allowed my to try the machines and my husband asked her how much for this one machine. She told him the price and he said we will take that one and the sewing table to go with it. Just let my wife pick the color she wants. When we left I asked my husband why he just bought all of that instead of the part that we actually went for and he said he would have spent any amount in that store if I had seen the look on my face. He said when I was trying out the machines and I tried this one Elna, my eyes lit up and the smile on my face was worth a million dollars. He said he would have spent any amount to see that again. He told me Happy Birthday and that I was worth every penny. My husband is an awesome guy! I love him to death!

It’s hard to choose one gift that stands out in my memory however my mum & dad recently came across an unfinished patchwork quilt top amongst a number of old items in a set of drawers belonging to my late grandfather. They gifted it to me and told me who they think had made it (more about this on my blog shortly). It has little monetary value but we think it dates back to around the 1880s, I am hoping to ‘restore’ it and it is certainly something I will treasure!

My best gift ever was an antique quilt that was made by my maternal great grandmother and passed to my Mom and she gave it to me on Mother’s Day! It was made around the Victorian era of silks, wools, and velvets. I treasure that quilt.

After reading all the posts about favorite gifts, many bring back memories. Of course the gift of Jesus never goes away, and I love being with family during the holidays. As our kids grow older, it’s harder and harder to all be in the same place at the same time because of work, distance, and other things. One favorite memory is from years ago…my parent’s income was extremely limited and there were five of us children. We could choose anything we wanted that was $10 or less. I had the most fun dreaming about how I would spend that $10. Wound up with one of those hair dryers that had the big plastic elasticized boufant hats that attached to a table unit. Loved that thing! My how things have changed!

I am so amazed from visiting these sites! So many quilters donating their time, also material, funds, and expertise to so many great causes! I am familiar to donating to worthy organizations, but really know I have most definitely NOT done all I could have done after viewing these sites! You all are inspiring – and inspiring me to get off my duff and give more of myself to others, not just the little I have given previously. Some would prob think I have given quite enough, but I guarantee not even close! You have all renewed my faith and commitment to do better in the coming year and further. I sincerely “Thank you!”
