Today is the ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of The Splendid Sampler– WOW! That’s hard to believe! I’m doing a Giveaway to celebrate…. keep reading…
One year ago today, the first block for The Splendid Sampler was released. It was February 14, 2016 that this perfectly themed block was released:
I designed 2 blocks for The Splendid Sampler, a bonus block called Summer Flip Floppin’:
and a block called Little Things:
I showed you how to make a mug rug with this block in this blog post.
Since today is Valentine’s Day, I thought it would be fun to play with making this block into a Valentine’s Day block and mug rug- so cute! Just use pink and red fabrics, and do a simple heart applique instead of the tea cup:
If you make 4 of the blocks (6″ each), you will end up with a 12″ block like this:
The Little Things block will appear in the soon-to-be-released Splendid Sampler book.
***Please note that in a short time, the block patterns will NO LONGER be available for free on The Splendid Sampler website. Get all the details here.
To celebrate this One Year Milestone, there is a blog hop and giveaways! I am giving away a quilt-related mystery novel and a box of fabric remnants! My daughter is between jobs for a couple of weeks, so I’ve had her here cleaning out the fabric stash and studio. I threw a bunch of stuff into a box- these are remnants and strike-off’s from 2 of my fabric lines from a few years ago. (“Strike-offs” are “test” fabrics which come to us from the mill when we are playing with the colors to get them just right.)

I loved chatting with women from all over the world and seeing the same block done a 100 different ways.
My favorite technique is to take my time and try new things and the SS was just the right project to do that. I am more confident now to choose fabrics, color, value, a little applique, and paper piecing projects. My favorite is appliqué. This has been some journey and loved every minute.
I love foundation paper piecing.
I love appliqué! I have enjoyed it for many years and now it is even more fun with the new machines that make it even easier.
I truly enjoyed traveling all over the world, reading about each designer.. .their tips, challenges they over come and sharing a bit about their lives. Inspiration came from so many avenues and challenges were accepted many times over! I’ve learned a lot in my skills and enjoyed trying new methods and techniques, with applique being one of my favorite sewing techniques, I was in heaven when those blocks were released. I must confess, most of the blocks I have finished are the applique blocks! HEHEEHhhe! ~ quiltlovefordomesticfelicity(at)gmail(dot)com

I have yet to figure out which of the techniques is my favorite as I have yet to finish trying all of them at this point, but so far my favorite thing about this has been the learning process.
Piecing is probably my favorite due to learning all kinds of quick techniques but I enjoy learning all the different ways and hope to be able soon to actually start my splendid sampler blocks
My favorite technique is applique. Love the quietness of the hand sewing.
Mixing and matching fabric is one of my favorite pasttimes before I work on a new project. Then comes the fun part of cutting, piecing and watching it all come together. One of my new loves is applique. I love how it adds dimension to a quilt top.
I love piecing, but am very interested in learning how to embroider and to do more applique as well. Love your projects!
I loved the variety of the blocks everyone created. Personally I prefer piecing blocks unless I’m traveling & then I like to do embroidery.
What a fun giveaway! To possibly get someone else’s scraps to make a quilt with.
I love to go through piles of fabrics. Thanks for the giveaway.
Mariyn
This has been a journey for me!! It started out fast and then slowed down somewhere near the middle….I am still working on this and I have loved every minute of it. The English Paper Piecing was new for me…and quite a challenge for my mildly arthritic fingers. I was also reintroduced to foundation paper piecing, and I loved it as much as I remembered. The thing that really was fun, though, was returning to embroidery!! My mother taught me to embroider when I was a little girl….probably about 7-8 years old. It was so fun doing the blocks as they brought back precious memories for me. Sadly, I lost my Mom in September two days before what would have been her 92nd birthday. So, now I am in catch-up mode….and enjoying every minute!! Thanks for this wonderful experience!! Its been a hoot!! :) <3 fncsteach@msn.com
I enjoy choosing a fabric for the project I start. Thank you for the opportunity to win this great giveaway.
Joan
I am new to quilting and love every aspect that I have tried so far. The feeling of accomplishment is my favorite part of quilting.
We have a group of about 10 that meet at 8:00am every Wed.to show our progress on the 2 weekly block. (We all were happy for the Christmas break LOL) We fondly embrace our friendships as the Splendettes. How excited we were to see how differently we did each block. Loved all the techniques.
I love sampler blocks because they show so many beautiful things all together. Many of my friends do not quilt or embroidery so I love showing them things like this and encouraging them to try. I love it all, quilting and embroidery make my heart sing and bring peace to my soul!
Choosing a fabric for a project is exciting. Going through the various fabrics is a joy and so much fun. Thank you for the giveaway.

I just recently found out about the Splendid Sampler blocks and immediately downloaded the patterns. They look like a lot of fun. I will be starting them soon.
Love to applique, you can never have enough fabric for this process. Love your work. . Thank you
Since I’m a beginner, I love everything. Haven’t yet narrowed down a favorite technique. Just live watching all the colors (and hopefully points) coming together to form something new.

I really enjoy needle turn applique, but have recently started to learn paper piecing and am falling in love with this technique as well.
I’m just starting to quilt so I don’t have a favorite technique yet. The fabric you are giving away would definitely help me get started. lynnmerrow@yahoo.com

I would have to say piecing followed by embroidery. I have never EPP or appliquéd anything but I sure would like to try.

So with ADHD I like to do it all. I do embroidery but my favorite is quilting. I get bored with big projects and do something else for a bit then go back. I am self taught and will do things several times until i can do it properly.

Definitely piecing and really liking paper piecing lately.

I love doing appliqué -it’s my favorite.
My favorite thing about quilting is choosing the fabrics for each block and seeing how the block looks made in different colorways. Some blocks are great to repeat and use for an entire quilt. For the SS I find that some of the embroidered blocks seem too fancy to go with more whimsical blocks, so I will make 2 separate quilts.Fun!
I love appliqué & piecing equally. I also like to do hand embroidery. I have not done paper piecing but it’s on my to do list! Thanks for the awesome giveaway!
I piece but I want to try paper piecing as there are so many cute blocks to try!

I like all methods of the quilting process but piecing is the most favorite. Especially like string and scrappy piecing as can do endlessly without a lot of thinking. Makes it very relaxing. But then there is the finished quilt after quilting. Whow

I would so very much like to win this. I first learned to sew as a little girl when my grandmother sat me down at her sewing machine and taught me. A semester of sewing in Home Ec (which is what they called it back in the day) renewed my interest in sewing back in the late 60’s, and I made all my clothing until the late 70’s. And then came the very long drought, where for over 35 years, I had no time and no place to sew. And now, retired, I am again sewing and have taken up quilting. Thanks to things I have learned by following your blogs, I have fallen in love with applique, advanced to intermediate patterns and am rediscovering embroidery. Winning this would mean a lot to me. Thank you for the opportunity.
I love the piecing! Seeing the square come together and then the whole top. Thanks for having the giveaway,
Carol R.

I still love piecing, but enjoy learning new techniques every day!

Enjoy the ride!!
I started hand sewing my blocks, loved it and have made several complete quilts that way, then I started appliqué,live, and now I’m working on machine piecing, the quilting will come later. Paper piecing I have yet to master but love ❤️ what I have tried!
My favorite is piecing and I trying to like paper piecing. I love you blog. I am also on the east coast in PA
I just took a paper piecing class and loved it! I did not get in on the Splended Sampler this last year, but pre-ordered the book what seems like ages ago! I am waiting to start soon…I did your mug rug in purples and enjoy it every day:) anitabchef@yahoo.com
For now I like piecing the best. I don’t have an embroidery machine and haven’t hand embroidered in years. I do like it though, just was into different hobbies. Never tried paper piecing, but I am very interested in learning! So much to learn in too little time! :) I want to do it all!!!
Thank you for the opportunity! I love all things related to piecing Especially paper piecing! hope there will be another one.
I believe my favorite would have to be piecing, but i love foundation also.
I just like everything about quilting. I like finishing a quilt and saying it is mine – every bit of it. I use piecing and machine-applique the most, but I would like to explore paper piecing.

I don’t know that I have a favorite. Incorporating different techniques to finish a creative – one of a kind piece, runs through my blood. I often take one “pattern/method” and claim a ‘ so.. what if I…’ style to it. Mixed media or using Reverse Applique vs. Applique are my go to’s when I want a brake from traditional piecing.
Thank you for the giveaway.
What a great milestone for the Splendid Sampler!

I am just starting to quilt, just finished a queen sized top, any help is appreciated. Love your blog, give me the spark to get started. So far my favorite is just doing different blocks.
It’s like trying to choose who is my favorite child. It would take an act of King Solomon to make that decision. Thanks for all you marvelous ideas and great patterns to say nothing of the inspiration
Piecing is my preferred method but the chance to learn something new is always nice. Thank you for this opportunity.
Definitely working with all the block colors and seeing how the embroidery by hand makes each block pop.

Applique is my favorite technique
I like the hand embroidery look on blocks – especially your quilt blocks. The combinations are so pretty.
I really like appliqué but for a quicker result, piecing is my first choice.

I love all aspects of quilting but that last stitch of a project is absolutely wonderful. I get to see what I’ve created!
I think applique (hand) is my favorite. I have also enjoyed improving my piecing skills (which still need more practice). I had learned embroidery while in my teens, but I had given it up for over 40 years. I want to thank you, Jacquelynn, for reminding me of my love of embroidery. I have completed several embroidery projects this winter while watching TV at night.
What a fun box of fabric–and how fun to have your daughter there! I enjoy your blog/ projects/and quilting insights so much!
My best,
Mary ( guinnessclan (at) sbcglobal.net)
I love piecing, paper piecing and machine embroidery.

I loved both of your Blocks for the Splendid Sampler, as I love doing applique. I will be making a Valentine Day Heart Mug rug for my sister for her birthday in April. I know she will love it as much as I loved making “Little Things” and “Summer Flip Floppin” Thank you for your beautiful and fun blocks. I also love your embroidery designs. I am retired and live at Crown Point, Alaska and sewing and needlework keep me going. Thank you for your artistry and talent.
I don’t have a favorite
I love all forms of quilting, but probably my favorite is applique. it seems I’m drawn to that first then embroidery.
I love them all. It really depends on my mood. So appreciate the introduction by the Splendid Sampler to the various techniques, styles and approaches. Thank you for your contribution as a designer.
My favorite technique is piecing, but I love applique as well. Paper-piecing is a good way to be more accurate. I used to love embroidery but it’s difficult for me because I can’t see as well as I used to. But, yes, piecing is my favorite, for now. Thanks for the opportunity to win your generous giveaways.
My favorite is probably embroidery, but I’m still learning to do some of the others. Thank you offering this giveaway.

I like anything that can be accomplished on a machine. No patience for hand sewing. I’ve really been into scrappy pieced quilts lately and there’s nothing more fun than going through other people’s scraps! Thank you.

Applique, applique and more applique are my favorite methods
I really like the look of bright colored appliqué blocks.
hi – thank you for your addition to the Splendid Sampler. Not sure I could tell you my favorite method since I loved them all. It was my first attempt on Paper-piecing and EPP. I believe my favorite was the embroidery – quite a long time since I had done that technique. Got a chance to refresh my memory.
I love to try new techniques but I think my favorites are applique or Paper piecing. I am working on a hand sew paper piecing project right now. It is my first try. thank you for a chance to win.
I love to pick out fabric, then cut it up and sew it back together. I also enjoy embroidery but haven’t done it in a while. My next challenge will be to try paper piecing. It looks difficult but a friend tells me it’s fun.
I love all forms, but applique is my favorite because it reminds me of my mother. I use to watch her sew every evening, applique was so interesting to me, much like a puzzle. So sweet and brilliant of you to do your fabric scraps give away!
I really enjoy appliqué best, but piecing is a lot of fun also. I’ve done paper piecing, but need more practice with it.
I love spring. Not too cold and not too hot. I’m ready after all this rain. There is no such thing as scraps, well almost. This would be a wonderful thing to have and I love books.
I filled this in but it disappeared! I am a newby but I love the piecing.
I like piecing but also do some appliquing.have done some embellishment on wall hangings.
Learning all of these new techniques was so exciting; no favorites.
I love hand sewing on the binding. During this process I take time to pause every now and then and remember to enjoy the piecing, the quilting and finally the binding.
My favorite is piecing. I love playing with geometric shapes. But I did learn to not be afraid of hand embroidery or EPP.
I love learning new ways of doing things. I love hand sewing, and creating something new with all my scraps from making quilts. I would love this to add new things to my scrap pile. Thanks, love your site.
My favorite is hand applique. I enjoy following your blog posts.
My favorite technique is patchwork piecing. I love simple and complex patchwork!
I’m a newbie just learning, so I do not have a favorite yet, but I’ve signed up for your monthly Art of Home paterns and have just bought some embroidery materials to start! I love your style and patterns.
I love applique or any block that incorporates both piecing and applique.
I love playing with scraps to create a project big or small.
Loved the entire project.
I would have to say that my favorite technique is applique. Love being able to embellish the applique with beads, embroidery or whatever makes it pop to add texture and dimension.
Thanks so much for all your wonderful patterns, tips and techniques and for sharing your gift of creativity with all of us. Hope you have a great week.
