Mmmmm..a perfect afternoon is when my husband and I get in the car with no destination in particular and we drive…our routes are all the back roads. Windows down, music blaring and both of us singing..we meet new people, make new friends, explore this great country of ours and best of all we ENJOY each other to the fullest!

My perfect afternoon — Listening to a podcast off of my Nook during 2 hours of ironing fabric, cutting fabric and putting a block together followed with an hour’s nap and then rising to prepare dinner for the crew when they come home. Unfortunately this happens only about once a week and if lucky, twice in one week.

My favorite or perfect afternoon is relaxing in my favorite living room chair thumbing through my most recent quilting magazines and dream quilting, as I look at the patterns and fabrics auditioning on the pages. My dream quilting usually turns into a wonderful fifteen to twenty minute nap, which leaves me eager to disappear into my quilting room to work on my dream quilt ideas.

My favorite afternoon activity is alternating periods of cutting fabric at the picnic table in our screen porch at the cabin, snuggling back into my rocking lounge chair on same porch with a fun book and view of the quiet lake, and some time sewing. I like to alternate activities to keep back strain at a minimum, and no activity becomes tedious.

A perfect afternoon for me is far away and few between. Once a year we go to Maui. There is a local arts and crafts fair that is held at a community center once a month. Almost all of the booths are local artisans selling and displaying their work. I love strolling through, taking my time, looking and admiring their talents and visiting with them. I look forward to that day every year. Such a perfect afternoon.

My idea of a perfect afternoon is first, know what is for dinner and get that ‘going’… cooking, defrosting, whatever! Then heading to my sewing machine and/or cutting table and play with fabric, maybe piecing for awhile, cutting out some fabric pieces, getting my pressing done, add more blocks to the design wall and ending the afternoon with a lovely glass of wine, sitting outside and enjoying some warm afternoon sunshine before the task of dinner time arrives.

Sitting in my sewing room working on a project, with my service dog Indy snoozing on his bed or playing with a toy, and looking out the windows at my flower gardens. Having some music in the background. No phone, no interruptions. And when Indy needs to go out, we walk out into the garden and go sit in the Secret Garden for a while and take a short nap. Later we go back to the sewing room. I returning to my projects and Indy continues to play with his toys or curls up on his bed or one of my chairs. He will sit on my chairs and watches me or looks out the windows. He barks at the squirrels when they come into the gardens. Indy is also very good at letting me know when it’s snack time and med time. The sewing room is just off the kitchen. We eat it in the sewing room so we can look outside and I can continue to work. He makes me laugh and brings me so much joy…and does his job well!

A perfect afternoon. Having lots of the green stuff in my pocket (no plastic allowed on perfect afternoons), going shopping with a good friend, and hitting all of the fabric stores within 75 or so miles, stopping for coffee and energy* as needed, and finally arriving at our deluxe retreat where we are going to spend the next week!
*Scones, big cookies, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting — you get the idea.

I many ideas of a perfect afternoon but the one that makes it perfect is to sit in the room where I have my fabric on shelves & sorted by color and just sit on the floor playing with the fabrics. Would these colors go together, what could I do with this group of fabrics, just feeling the fabric & envisioning what I could do with it. After I’m finished with that I would go take a nap ( to rest my brain from all that thinking).

I finished up a scrap pieced valance for my screened porch this morning after 2 days of mismeasuring and much promising to never guess I remembered a window width again. I grabbed up my granddaughter and headed to the greenhouse where we indulged in flowers for pot filling (none of which where on my list, but all too pretty to leave there :) ) We came home and hung the valance that now looks just right, planted flowers and grilled dinner. My favorite afternoon would be spent on the beach. A west coast Pacific ocean beach. Laying on the sand, on my favorite beach towel I can see the fine grains of sand on the beach.
Laying in the sun, soaking up the warmth of golden rays. Smelling the summery scent of Coppertone and Hawaiian Tropics suntan oils… Listening to the rustle of the sea grasses, the cries of the Seagulls, smell the delicious scent of salty sea air. My favorite afternoon would watching the ocean waves rushing on the shore, leaving lacy frothy bubbles behind with sea shells, agates, pieces of driftwood, sea glass, and kelp seaweed. And if I am really lucky an vintage Japanese fishing float would wash up on the shore at just the right moment for me to catch it and take it home to add to my collection of floats. My favorite afternoon would be jumping those waves, walking for miles along the beach looking for seashells, agates, driftwood and sea glass . I would walk and walk for an hour, soaking up every bit of the ocean and beach. Watching other people walking, collecting, playing Frisbee with dogs and kids.. And after walking for ever and back on the beach, I would come back to my towel and maybe read my favorite novel to the sound of ocean waves.. and gently fall asleep. Nothing feels better than to be lulled to sleep by the sound of ocean waves.
That, would be heaven, on the beach, at the ocean.

A perfect afternoon (low 80’s) is sitting von the front porch swing, listening to soft music, working on a hand project or just watching nature going on around me. The birds singing the squirrels chasing each other around the tree across the yard and up another tree. Sometimes I just sit and swing and enjoy!

Since she was 2, she would toss all my fabric scraps I save into the air like they were falling leaves, then jump into the middle of them and giggle. Then we would have tea parties on the deck, weather permitting, or in the kitchen. I absolutely LOVE those moments with her.

I would have to say yesterday was a perfect afternoon. I was sitting on the back porch watching the birds at the bird feeders. There were at least seven goldfinches and then an indigo bunting arrived. When my husband came home from work we were looking at the crab apple tree that was blooming and a Baltimore oriole lighted in one of the shrubs. I quickly cut up some oranges and hung them on the front porch. He landed there and was eating the suet and the oranges. We have been in this house for twenty seven years and I have not been able to entice the orioles. He showed up again this morning. Now I am going to hang some twine from some of the trees. Hope I can entice them to stay.

The funny thing about a “perfect” afternoon is that it can be so many things. I have just moved to a different state, so yesterday’s perfect afternoon was like this: My niece gave me a day and came to my house. We adjusted furniture placement, hung artwork, and turned my new house into my new home. When we were done for the day, we sat down and admired our work. It was perfect. Today may bring a completely different perfect afternoon. Who knows?

A perfect afternoon – chill-axing (chilling out and relaxing) and reflecting on the people in my life and how I can add a touching moment to theirs. I think about my fabrics and patterns and who is most in need to feel the warmth and love from a handmade quilt. Past recipients have been a co-worker going through tough family times and a friend going through chemo treatments. The look on their faces when they open the totally unexpected gift is priceless. My son had even requested a baby quilt for a coworker, a single, new mom with barely anything. He said: “Mom, you know you always say that everyone should feel the warmth and love from a handmade quilt. Well, Jenni from work is going to have a baby and she doesn’t have anything and I don’t think anyone cares. Could you make her a quilt?” I couldn’t get sewing fast enough. My sewing bee fiends have even given me left over squares or triangles to use in my gifts. You never know how much you actually touch the lives of other with your own kindness and generosity.

perfect afternoon would be coming home from church, kicking off my shoes and just relaxing. Reading a book, sewing on my quilt, listening to classical music, just totally turning it all off, no technical gadgets, just taking the day off and resting, like God did.. He didn’t have to rest but He did.. says so.. God Rested. So I figure is the creator of the universe needed or chose to rest, so can I. So, just enjoying His creation, the beauty of His flowers, the songs of His birds, that would be real fine.
